Missions opportunities at First Presbyterian Church include local, regional, and international levels.  Below are some of the missions we support:

Comfort Tree

In 2017, we began our Comfort Tree ministry. This tree provides comfort kits to children who are removed from their homes by DSS and placed into emergency care. The kits include basic necessities as well as items that may be comforting to the child in order to ensure a smoother transition. Each comfort kit is packed in a duffel bag with items that are appropriate for and specific to children ages two and three.

Burke United Christian Ministries (BUCM)

The BUCM Soup Kitchen offers a free mid-day meal every day of the week and two evenings a week. Meals are prepared by mission teams from different churches so that hungry people might eat a hot meal. First Presbyterian Church members volunteer on the second Tuesday and fourth Thursday of every month.

Meals on Wheels

Meal on Wheels is a program which delivers meals to senior citizens in Burke County. Mission Teams from First Presbyterian Church deliver them to seniors on a pre-arranged route.

The J. Iverson Riddle Developmental Center

The Riddle Center in Morganton provides comprehensive residential care and treatment for 350 developmentally disabled persons. A mission team from First Presbyterian Church assists residents to attend the Sunday morning worship service in the campus chapel on the second Sunday of each month.

Swannanoa Correctional Center for Women and Foothills Correctional Institution

Our Read-Me-a-Book Drive collects books for inmates who have young children. The inmates then record the books onto CDs and send the books and CDs to their children.

Canned Food Drives for Burke United Christian Ministries Food Pantry

Canned food drives are held regularly to help feed the hungry in our community.

The Nickel-a-Meal offering is taken the first Sunday of every month.

Souper Bowl of Caring

Our youth, along with youth from other area churches, collect money which goes to a local charity to tackle hunger.

Mission Morganton

Mission Morganton is held on a Saturday in September each year and offers us the chance, together with other denominations, to serve on missions within our community. Mission activities include construction, painting, chopping wood, picking up trash, food and clothing distribution, nursing home visitation, and backpack ministry.
