Committees

Committees are one of the primary ways members participate in the life and ministry of First Presbyterian Church. Explore the groups below to learn more about each committee and opportunities to serve.

  • The purpose of the Administrative Committee is to oversee and administer the church's practical operations in order to ensure its overall financial, physical, and operational health, with a focus on the church's finances, building, physical improvements, grounds, and employment-related matters. Subcommittees of the Administrative Committee include, but are not limited to: Columbarium Subcommittee, Personnel Subcommittee and Stewardship and the Planned Giving Subcommittee.

  • The purpose of the Columbarium Committee is to handle the operation and maintenance of the church's columbarium, including the sale of niche spaces, the administration of the facility's finances, and the keeping of the facility's records.

  • The purpose of the Personnel Committee is to nurture and support the health of pastor(s), staff, and all other persons called to lead within the church and to handle all aspects of the relationship between the church and its employees.

  • The purpose of the Stewardship and Planned Giving Committee is to coordinate, clarify, and communicate the vision, mission, and values of the church by encouraging, inviting, and challenging the church to practice faithful stewardship through the church's annual stewardship campaign and planned giving.

The number of session members serving on the Administrative Committee should, in the absence of specific sessional approval, be limited to a total of no more than four ruling elders, one of whom serves as Chair of the Administrative Committee, another of whom serves as Vice-Chair of the Administrative Committee, and one of whom serves as Chair of the Personnel Subcommittee. There is no necessity for the chairs of the Columbarium or Stewardship and Planned Giving Subcommittees to be current members of the Session.

  • The purpose of the Spiritual Formation Committee is to provide tools, resources, and formative experiences to help God's people know, love, and follow Jesus. It plans for and oversees the discipleship-related ministries of the church across all ages and stages of development.

  • The purpose of the Connection and Care Committee is to embody God's love so that all may find identity, purpose, and belonging in the family of God. It handles all matters relating to ministry to, contact with, relationships among, and outreach to and care for current and prospective members and their families—either individually, in small groups, or as a whole, in times of joy, sorrow, and crisis.

Note: Fellowship and "Good News" (Membership) Committees are now part of Connection and Care.

  • The Missions and Outreach Committee is the outward expression of the church focusing on awareness of our community, country, and world to intentionally share and exhibit the Good News of Jesus Christ in word and deed. Its purpose is to foster this outward, missional impulse to identify the beneficiaries of and facilitate support for the church's benevolence-related activities, including the provision of financial support to other organizations, to assess and evaluate ministry partners and their ongoing needs, and to recruit church members for intentional engagement in service to the broader community.

  • The purpose of the Worship Committee is to plan for and administer the church's participation in its living relationship with the triune God. Worship challenges, teaches, transforms, encounters, convicts, and sends changed people out into the world. The committee provides for this Spirit-inspired, corporate worship of God, weekly, on special occasions, and liturgical holy days.

  • The purpose of the Nominating Committee is to identify, nurture, and support the use of the spiritual gifts of God's people through service as church officers. This work includes proposing the names of church members for service as elders, deacons, and members of the Nominating Committee for election by the congregation.

  • The purpose of Presbyterian Women is to nurture faith through prayer and Bible study, support the mission of the church, develop fellowship among women, and encourage service in Christ's name. Through three circles, Presbyterian Women provide opportunities for spiritual growth, mutual support, mission involvement, and participation in the life and ministry of the congregation.
